Single Girl and Paper Piecing

I've been itching to do a Denyse Schmidt Single Girl quilt for some time so I bought the pattern this weekend.  Then the stars aligned and I found out on Monday that there is this nifty "Single Girl Support Group" quilt along that just started.  So now I've got a support network.

I decided to use paper piecing on my curves instead of cutting out 31 individual templates for each block, so i spent some time last night creating my new curve template.
First I tested out that my curve was the correct shape

Then I traced each of the template pieces into the curve.  I ended up with 4 curved pieces and they are essentially the same shapes as the individual templates in the pattern.

Let me know if this is helpful to you and your Single Girl efforts!

  1. I'm so glad you did this--I really wanted to foundation piece it and was hoping something like this would work! I'm still waiting for my pattern to arrive--are these curves based on the actual pattern curves or did you draw it yourself? I'm wanting to put all the templates together and draw the curve so that it's the exact curve (and then I'll just improv the individual pieces) but I want to make sure it's the exact same ring so that the other template pieces will fit. Does that make sense?

  2. Yes, I used the exact pattern to design my curves. This curve above fits with the other templates in the Single Girl pattern (the inside background and the outside background) to make the full block.

You will see the way the pattern comes that there is a gap in the way the inner and outer templates are drawn. That gap between the seam lines (dashed lines) for each of those pieces is the exact size of the pieced curve. So I added an extra 1/4 inch in each dimention for seams, and traced the space between the templates. I double checked my measurements by making the practice block and also lined up the individual pieces inside my curve to double check. Hope that helps

  3. Thanks for much for sharing your work! I can't wait for my pattern to arrive. But for now, I have my husband on the hook to print these on 11 x 17" for me - yay! This could really make this project less daunting, heck, it already has! Thanks you for sharing!

  4. Oh, that's awesome! My pattern hasn't arrived yet but I was also thinking of converting it to paper piecing. I know there's something to doing it the old way, but I just don't have the patience!

Have you ever tried running freezer paper through your printer? I'm wondering if that would work?

  7. Hi, just got the pattern and thought, wow, need to paper piece this to save time, so glad I found your blog. My question is, because there are so many templates, is each quarter ring of the bock different?
